French industrial music magazine, Obskure has written a review of 'Envisioning Abstraction: the Duality of FluiD' (ALRN008). Below is an excerpt from the review. The full review will be published in the Feburary 2011 issue.
"Right after a rough introduction, including feedbacks, cracklings and a powerful and rounded bass line, the FluiD’s expansionist world takes off. 'The Duality of FluiD' is presented first with a superb artwork that portrays the African continent repainted with the U.S. flag (the work is done by Trey Crim of Digitally Ruined Graphics).
The project started in Chicago (Christophe G. is originally from Los Angeles) and the industrial aspect of his music takes then a social meaning you can’t deny. The boundaries are pushed track after track to produce an intelligent and unclassifiable music. On one hand, you have a Trip-Hop coupled with the dirtiest Dub. Of course, some of you could think of Scorn ('The Absent Present'), but the guitars (always played in slow motion) provide a Rock/Heavy touch ('Froz n II'), downright Cold-Wave ('Parallel States') or Noise ('Iron Communique'), that will appeal to many listeners..."
1966 marked the first ever World Festival of Black Arts and Cultures held in Dakar, Senegal; this celebratory event brought together people of different nationalities and generations with a common goal: to shed light on the struggle and persistence of black people in the face of colonization. In 1977, the second festival was held in Nigeria. And now, on December 10th, 2010- three decades later- the third World Festival of Black Artsand Cultures returns to Dakar, and lets just say, it seems the third time's a charm.
This year's lineup includes concerts, dance performances, documentary and feature film screenings, theatre, lectures on various art forms (from architecture and design to reggae) to name a few, that will run through New Year's night, with free admission to it all. As we learned on the Black World Festival website, the event this year focuses on Africa in it's new context: Africa as free, proud, creative, and optimistic. Brazil will be the guest of honor, bringing along with it a slew of artists that are culturally diverse and emblematic of the dialogue between different people and cultures, created by this year's event. Check out our slide show of videos below for a look at our favorite artists featured at this year's event.

"Sascha Müller aka Pharmacom start his career with djìng and producing in 1990. He was inspired by Projects like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and stuff like Sven Väth played in his dj sets. The musical style reaches from ambient chill out, house and techno music in his own special way. His way of producing is the use old analog equipment in the same way as the newest Software in digital producing. The greatest thing for him is to create new soundcollages and wicked samples for his tracks. As a Dj he played in several european locations and events like love parade and thunderdome. At the moment he is also playing as a vj and is involved in multimedia productions with some other global video and grafic artists."
Look for Sascha's upcoming 'Move My Body' EP on Alrealon Music (release date 12.13.10).
Last month Alrealon artists Zilmrah /O\ and Robert Pepper of PAS performed together at Silent Barn in NYC. You can view video of their performance here.

I wanted to draw your attention to some creative entities which haven't received the credit they deserve. Those entities being a selection of record labels that are working hard to release great music (often accompanied with stunning visuals). These labels are releasing music that defies easy catagorization and genrification. A few of the labels who are releasing music that is stimulating, unique and challenging: DSMS, Milligrid Records, Placenta Recordings, TrashF**k Records, 5nakefork, Tundra Dubs and Ratskin Records. Please take a look and more importantly a listen to the music that all these labels have released and are releasing; I promise you won't be disappointed.
Back home after a weekend at Spark Festival. I performed on Friday night with Robert and Amber of PAS. I arrived in Minneapolis on Friday afternoon and met-up with Robert and Amber at our hotel. We then met-up with the Vultures. The Vultures are a UK quartet who engage in group improvisation. After a little food and a lot of catching-up we headed to our venue for soundcheck. The venue was an unused building, which lended a very industrial feel to the evening. Opening the show were the Friction Brothers who are from Chicago. They are a trio of cello, percussion and dry-ice. Yes, dry-ice! One of the members uses dry-ice as a sound producing device. You just have to see it.... A truly stunning performance that left most in attendance, awe-struck. PAS and I were next. Our set consisted of Robert and Amber improvising over my processed beats. It was one of the most enjoyable performances I have had. Following us were the nights featured artists, Vultures. Four guys and more gear than you can imagine; bass guitar, ten-speed bicycle, modular synths, computer and lots of little noisemakers. They put it all to use to create amazing soundscapes. Dense and layered their improvisatoions feel and sound more like compositions as opposed to on the spot creations. Group improv, doesn't get any better than this! We then joined Vultures for a large group improv. I was honored that Vultures would invite me to join them. We did two pieces together. The first was a beatless excurion into unknown worlds. The second featured industrial beats forming the basis for a white hot blast of industrial/krautrock.
Some of you may or may not know, I co-run (with Philippe Gerber aka DJ Phys), the music label, Alrealon Music. I wanted to update everyone on what we're doing and on our new releases.

DSMS is releasing it as a 3" CDR (with full-color artwork) and Alrealon Music is releasing it digitally. 'ARU meets FluiD...' is a collaboration between Aural Resuscitation Unit and FluiD.

Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts 2010
September 28 - October 3, 2010
University of Minnesota
Minneapolis, Minnesota
"For one week each year, the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts gathers creators and performers of new media arts from around the world to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, USA to showcase their work to the public."
09.15.10 :: Monks Kaffe in Dubuque, IA. Joining Sinjo Thraw Mash and I were ARU and Bob Bucko Jr. The night was also the release party for 'ARU meets FluiD - Fearless Empire Killers'. ARU got things going with (in my opinion) one of his best sets. I've had the pleasure of seeing ARU a few times and this set surpassed any and all that I had previously witnessed. STM were next and for me it was like seeing them for the first time. Sublte additions to their sonic arsenal yielded, a richer more interesting sound. Bob Bucko Jr., followed, one man, one guitar, one saxophone and one looping pedal. All I can say is WOW! Bob simply made the most of what he had and we're all the better for having been in attendance.
09.16.10 :: Day Old Basement, Macomb, IL. In short, the BEST show of the four-days. We returned to Day Old having played there previously on our 2010 Spring Tour. We all had a smile on all our faces as we greeted friends we had made from the last time we were there. As for the show, all I can say is Macomb loves it's weirdos and it's Dubstep and we gave them both. We spent the night in Macomb with a friend of Andy's (STM). "What happens in Macomb, stays in Macomb", suffice it to say, we enjoyed our time in Macomb and look forward to coming back.
09.17.10 :: The Brick, Kansas City, MO. Arriving in KC on a gorgeous day. The god RA was smiling down upon us. We met up with Jason of Volte Dio Volte at his house. A little rest and relaxation before the show. For our two shows in KC, we were joined by our very good and longtime friends, X+X. Upon our arrival at The Brick, the beer started flowing and soon X+X were onstage, playing one of their better sets. It was very energetic and ended with Heat taking his Electric Rake out for a good beating. VDV delivered a set of dark, hypnotic, improv, recalling at times Swans. Yes, it was that good! After a stellar night at The Brick, we retreated to Jason's house, were old friends got reacquainted and some new friends were made.
09.18.10 :: The Newsroom, Kansas City, MO. After getting everyone up and going, we headed over to Ken's (VDV) house. Where we were treated to a BBQ and a massive thunderstorm. Kansas City brought the hail. (LOL) Though nothing was going to keep us from having a good time. Nothing and I mean nothing beats, good food paired with even better friends! VDV treated us all with much warmth, generosity, repsect and love; I hope we did the same. Oh yeah, we also played as well. (LOL) The Newsroom show was a blast! Perfectly capping a weekend, I'm sure none of us will forget anytime soon.
Ahead of this Wednesday's (Sept. 15th) release of 'ARU meets FluiD - Fearless Empire Killers', the Dubuque Strange Music Society and Alrealon Music have made the entire release available for streaming. Also join FluiD, ARU and DSMS as they celebrate the release at Monk's Kaffe (Dubuque, IA.), on 09.15.2010.
Dubuque Strange Music Society has been operating WAY under the radar, releasing over twenty albums of original experimental sounds from the midwest and around the world. On September 15th DSMS celebrates a trilogy new of releases by Bob Bucko Jr., as well as a collaboration between FluiD from Chicago and ARU from Dubuque. The DSMS catalog of releases will be on display this night, which are otherwise only available by mail order. The economy is tight for everyone, so we are giving copies of the ARU meets FluiD release to everyone who pays cover. Discounts on the other DSMS releases will also be in effect for this event.
FluiD wowed the audience that caught him playing Monk's recently with his other project, Black Saturn vs. subduxtion which is a futuristic strain of hip-hop. Fluent in several genres, FluiD plans to drop sets of Dubstep at this show, expect heavy wobbly basslines and head nodding beats manipulated and effected live with FluiD's intriguing live/laptop/electronics set-up.
Bob Bucko Jr. probably needs no introduction to most of the 365 readers as he is a player in several Dubuque bands, Old Panther, Alma Sub Rosa, and Glimmer Blinkken most currently. His solo performances are always unique with Bob jumping between free jazz, noise rock, interpretations of classic tunes, and the occasional spontaneous improvisation. DSMS has just finished a trilogy of BBJR releases and we will have copies of the cassette 'Self Esteem Hand Jive' available.
Sinjo Thraw Mash hail from the Quad Cities, East Moline, IL. to be exact. This duo plays guitar, live electronics, and junk percussion in an improvised droning way that can be quite hypnotic. If the sounds don't do the trick, Jason also uses a table full of light toys which trigger his electronic noise boxes. Cloaked in neon and glow in the dark materials and letting loose with the lightshow, STM always get into "the zone". They have several albums released on Nail In The Coffin Records.
ARU splits the difference between dub music and noise to create a sound heavy on rhythmic elements. Lately focused on studio compostions, the sets at Monk's will be DJed sets of experimental dub music, including tracks from the FluiD collaboration. Eerie outer space bass vibes to freak out to.
There will be ALL AGES sets from everyone 7-9pm and 21+ sets 9-11pm. Come out for a rare night of Dub, Noise and Experimental musics in Dubuque.

Newly released on Placenta Recordings is my split CD with Chicago harsh-noise group, The Kremlin. You can purchase the CD directly from Placenta Recordings.
It has been a busy 2010 so far and it doesn't look it's showing any signs of slowing down. I've been working on a number of remixes and collaborations. There are still more to come, along with the release of my CD, 'Envisioning Abstraction: the Duality of FluiD'.
* Ghoul - 'Warm' and 'Down' (FluiD remixes) - Part of a remix swap with the Iowa based dubstep producer. Should be out by years end on Tundra Dubs.
* Black Saturn vs. subduxtion - 'Cosmic Karma' - Written in collaboration with Black Saturn. Two new tracks, 'Conquering Echo' and 'Dreamer'. To be released on Alrealon Music in June.
* Jason Covelli - 'I Am Evil' (FluiD remix) - I completed three remixes of Jason's spoken-word piece. All three remixes are forthcoming on Human.Burial.Tapes.CDs. The plan is to release a limited edition CD by late July.
* Actors&Actresses - 'Quiet' (FluiD remix) - I recently completed two remixes of the track 'Quiet'. One is a downtempo/trip-hop/glitch mix and the other is a drum and bass mix. The plan as I understnad it is for The Mylene Sheath to release a 12" vinyl of the best remixes and a digital version which will include all the remixes the band received.
* LaptopAcidXperience - 'cREEPYsHEEP' and 'Deep Water' (FluiD remixes) - Alrealon Music will be releasing a special version of the LAX single in Japan, which will include my two remixes. Release date is mid-September.
Before I leaving for my recent Midwest Tour, I did an interview with Industrialized Metal Webzine. The interview covered President Obama, globalization, Islam, activism and why I chose the name FluiD. Here is an excerpt from the interview -
A practical question - why on Earth did you name your project FluiD?
"I named it FluiD because they idea of being fluid or "fluidity" has been an underlying theme througout my musical life. I've played in all kinds of bands doing all kinds of music. I started out as a classical pianist, moved to jazz and eventually rock. I played saxophone is an avant-garde punk band, bass guitar in a thrash-metal band and keyboards in an electro/R&B group.
It's also akin to the idea of someone being fluent in a language. When we say someone is fluent in a language what we're saying is they understand it and can speak it. I think music is a language, a language I work to understand. The more fluid one is with the language of music, the easier it is to create something deeper and more meaningful with that language. You have understand, research and listen to what has come before you".
In advance of my forthcoming Midwest Tour, Alrealon Music and I are giving away, 'The Simultaniety of FluiD'. It is a ten-track release that includes remixes from John 3:16 and EGGBLOOD.
Recently I completed the sound-design for Chicago video artist Heejoo Kim's latest work, titled 'paramnesia I'
"Heejoo Kim: constructs 3D images of paramnesia (a distortion of memory in which fact and fantasy are confused), envisioning eidetic scenes populated by maternity wear and floating bodies".
Chris Gilmore, known by his stage name, ‘FluiD’, is a Chicago, IL. based experimental / multi-genre electronic musician, sound-designer and cultural activist. A self-described, "Afro-futurist". His first album 'Warhol' was released was in 1988 and since that time has released over a dozen albums. His 2011 release, 'Envisioning Abstraction: the Duality of FluiD' (ALRN008), received international
critical acclaim.
FluiD's music, encompasses a multitude of styles and influences - techno, jazz, noise, classical avant-garde, hip-hop, psychedelia, metal, dub, early industrial and ambient. It is often referred to as "post industrial hip-hop".
In addition to his many releases, FluiD has also performed throughout North America and Central America, from concert halls to art galleries to dance clubs. He was also a featured performer at several music festivals including, 'experi-MENTAL Festival' (Brooklyn, NY.), 'Noise Shock: Abstract Art and Music Festival' (East Moline, IL.), 'Under the Radar - experimental/industrial/electronic music exposition' (Kansas City, MO.) and 'Spark: Festival of Electronic Music and Arts' (Minneapolis, MN.).
