Prairie Avenue Gallery hosts, 'Pride' show
Chicago’s Prairie Avenue Gallery will host a Pride Show in honor of gay pride month in Chicago. The opening reception will be Sunday, June 7, noon-4 p.m., with food, music and mingling with the artists.
The gallery is housed in the Prairie Avenue Historic District, in the Keith House, one of the few remaining historic homes along Prairie Avenue. The building, located at 1900 S. Prairie Avenue, is also the former home of Woman Made Gallery.
The Prairie Avenue Gallery was founded in the mid-1980s by Joy Darrow, a photojournalist who was a managing editor of the Chicago Defender. Darrow died in 1996, and her daughters, Marcy and Tracy Baim, re-opened the gallery in May of this year with a show featuring freshmen students at the School of the Art Institute.
The Prairie Avenue Gallery was known for ground-breaking shows, including what is believed the first AIDS art show in the mid 1980s, a showcase of Black photojournalists, and shows featuring emerging Chicago photographers, sculptors and painters.
The new Prairie Avenue Gallery will have weekend hours. During the week the gallery will offer classes and studio space for photographers and artists.
Artists in the Pride Show are: Photographers Rick Aguilar, Steve Becker, Renee Brown, Kat Fitzgerald, Lisa Howe-Ebright and Betty Lark Ross. The painters and illustrators are Jorjet Harper, Juarez Hawkins, Carol James, David Johnson, Andrea Kaspryk, Mary King, Riva Lehrer, Otis Richardson, Erik R.Sosa and Travis. Carmen Noriega will display her stained glass works.
The Pride Show is in honor of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pride Month and will be up through June and July. The hours are: Sunday, June 7, Noon-4 p.m. opening; Sat., June 13, noon-3 p.m.; Sat., June 20, noon-3 p.m.; Sunday, June 21, noon-3 p.m.; Closed pride weekend (June 27-28); and open every Saturday and Sunday in July, noon-3 p.m. Call 312-907-7909 for hours by appointment.

'Disastrophe', the aftermath
Home from the 'Disastrophe' party in Detroit, had a blast! Big ups to my girl Khrys for putting this together and inviting me to play. Also thanks to Sam, Chris and Josh for the hospitality, much appreciated and I can't forget my boy Kevin for hooking the sound up LARGE.
The party had it all - breakcore, jungle, ragga, hip-hop, dancehall, industrial and gabber. Massive talent on display.
I got a little tour of some Detroit graf work. Amazing stuff. We went by this car wash that has this massvie graf mural, unreal! You have to see this.
Looking forward to getting up to Detroit and doing this again.

Secret Handshakes - New Works by Brian Morris and Mitch O'Connell
This show features two of our favorite artists from our home town, Brian Morris and Mitch O' Connell. Both Mitch and Brian draw heavily from tattoo-inspired graphics, though their styles differ greatly. Mitch tends a little more toward the light and kitschy whereas Brian tends to explore darker themes. Regardless, this should be another great show in our gallery!
Opening night was Friday, May 22 from 7pm until 10pm with music by DJ Yunicorn. Exhibit continues through June 7.
Marshall and Tear Drips Signing and Release Party
Free Goodies bags for the first 40 attendees!
Join us Saturday, May 30th from 4pm until 6pm for the official release party for our two new two series! Marshall Series 1 by 64 Colors and Tear Drips Series 1 by Travis Lampe are now available in the online store, but we'll be partying like it's the release day on Saturday the 30th.
Travis and 64 Colors artists Eric and Laura will be at Rotofugi Chicago signing and sketching plus the first 40 attendees get a goodie bag stuffed with stickers, buttons, mini prints and prizes including custom toys by both artists!

BLACK ART MUST TAKE MORE RISKS!!!
"There are so many coexisting tendencies in any given time. What is lost when the present reduces the past, ties it up with a ribbon so it can move on to the future? Is that result necessary? Is is real?"
