X+X Summer Tour

On tour this summer promoting his new CD, is my good friend Heat aka X+X. Heat is also founder and co-organizer of the (((NOISE SHOCK))) festivals. (((NOISE SHOCK))) is a two-day "Abstract Art & Music Festival". This years fest takes place July 10th and 11th @ Mixtapes Record Store in East Moline, IL.

Sonic, Phonic, Catatonic Tuesday

On the second Tuesday of every month (beginning November 10th), Against The Stream Collective curates Sonic, Phonic, Catatonic Tuesday at Swing State.

What this event is exactly is ever-evolving, but we strive to bring people more than just music.
If you are interested in participating know that only acts of the experimental and/or visual nature should apply. Defining these terms is up to you (and me.)

Spectralism

Recent musical explorations have revolved around the concept of Spectralism. In researching and exploring spectralism, I came across this article from the London Times Online. It asks the question is Spectralism the future of classical music?

"Before devising each piece of music, a composer would feed a computer a note, say the sound of a bell or a violin, and a programme would unravel it, revealing a spectrum of pitches, showing up as coloured lines on a graph. The composer would then take each of these pitches and get each part of the orchestra to reconstitute the original sound".

The new wing of the Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago has opened its' new modern wing. Designed by Renzo Piano, the $300 million, limestone-and-glass structure adds 264,000 sq. ft. to the existing 1893 beaux arts building, increasing gallery space by 35 percent and doubling education space.

"Renzo Piano is renowned for elegant galleries that defer to their contents. He has quietly become the most prolific designer of art museums around the globe-signaling a decisive shift in taste among museum patrons from the bold to the more decorous."

Stephen O'Malley Interview

A nice long interview with Oren Siegel of 106FM Jerusalem, Israel. This interview has been in the works for a long time - pretty much since we got this show going! Stephen O'Malley, one of this generation's most prominent creators, has worked with Burning Witch, Thorr's Hammer, Grave Temple, Khanate and many more, as well as being one of the most sought-after graphic designers. You might know him from a little group called Sunn o))) - a sonic boom of a band which has supplied audio-visual and sensual ecstasy for many fans of the drone genre - Oded and I included. We've spoken with Mr. O'Malley about his performance with Grave Temple during the second Lebanon war, his musical history, and of course, Sunn o)))'s new album - Monoliths and Dimensions. Rare Gems Re-discovered

A couple of newly discovered gems from my friend Will of the Chicago band, The Devil Bell Witch. Two "lost" bands from the 70's, Captain Beyond and Demon Fuzz.
